History of the EFGCP Better Medicine for Children Conference
The Paediatric Regulation of 2006 introduced new obligations for medicines developers in Europe. New fora were needed to discuss the implementation and understand the operational aspects of this new legislation. The European Forum for Good Clinical Practice (EFGCP) Children Medicines Working Party (CMWP) organized from 2007 onwards joined Paediatric conferences. In the beginning together with the European Medicines Agency who used to host it. These events were in cooperation with the Drug Information Association, first as DIA/EFGCP/EMA meetings, later in annual change of its organization lead between DIA and EFGCP.
And since 2016 the EFGCP CMWP continued to organize the annual “Better Medicines for Children” conference on their own. It is the only conference in Europe that aims to cover holistically all aspects of the development of medicines for children.
This conference is an opportunity for all involved in paediatric drug development, i.e., regulators, HTA bodies, patients’ representatives, hospitals and other trial sites, academia and industry, to share learnings and raise awareness about new regulatory requirements of interest to optimise paediatric drug development. Practical operational aspects and case examples of successful developments illustrate ways to improve the way forward toward better medicines for children. Patients’ and parents’ voices are important components to allow reality checks, and international representation of regulators provide insights for global paediatric drug development
Broad and attractive agendas attract a wide stakeholder participation, which provided a compendious overview of the leading issues to improve children’s access to innovative medicines.
Today, the conference is held annually, bringing together key voices from across paediatric drug development to advance better medicines for children.
